Bus-Truck Collision: 10 killed in Panchagarh

Ten people, including two women and two children, were killed and 15 others injured when a bus collided head-on with a goods-laden truck at Dashmile Bazar in Panchagarh Sadar upazila yesterday evening.

The deceased are Lovely Begum, her son Yeasin, Rezaul, Farid, Anitya, Russell, Layla, Lutfor, Mozammel and Monir. They are aged between 7 and 38. 

All the victims were bus passengers.

Sudarshan Kumar Roy, assistant superintendent of Panchagarh police, said the accident happened on the Panchagarh-Banglabandha highway around 7:30pm when the Panchagarh-bound electric poles-laden truck hit the bus coming from the opposite direction.

Five people died on the spot. Three others were declared dead after being taken to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital, while two more died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH), he told this correspondent over the phone.

The accident turned fatal as the poles penetrated into the bus and badly damaged it, the official said.

Babul Haque of Dashmile village, who witnessed the accident, told reporters that when the truck was crossing Dashmile Bazar area, the Banglabandha-bound bus crashed head-on with it. 

On information, police and firefighters rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and took them to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital.

The wounded were undergoing treatment at the sadar hospital and the RMCH.
