Reopen PUST

Students demand at human chain

Students of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) formed a human chain in the town yesterday, demanding reopening of the university.

The students also demanded acceptance of their six-point demand and withdrawal of the suspension order of 10 students who had earlier agitated. Most of the students at the programme refused to mention their names for fear of further punishment, said the participants at the rally.

The authorities concerned closed the university for an indefinite period and suspended the 10 students on November 6 following a students' agitation to realise the demands. They also banned all kinds of meeting, procession and agitation programmes on the campus.

Earlier on November 5, agitating students staged a demonstration in front of the administrative building and besieged the university vice-chancellor (VC), pro-VC, teachers and administrative officials to press home their six-point demand.

The demands include removing semester drop system, increasing subsidy money for dining and arrangement for sufficient chairs in classrooms.

The university authorities are yet to sit with them to meet the demands. Instead, they banned all kinds of meeting, procession and agitation programmes on the campus, which is very unfortunate for them, said the students at the human chain.

PUST students Rajib Raihan and Sajibur Rahman, among others, spoke at the programme.
