The remains of a warplane have been unearthed in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon in Budhar Banshertol area under Mahendranagar union in the upazila, about one kilometre from a former British air base in Harati union, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

Rezaul Islam, owner of the land, told The Daily Star that he found some metal parts while digging his plot for cultivation on Friday afternoon, and later more remains of the warplane were unearthed as he continued digging.

Later, he informed the local administration, police and air force in this regard, he said.

There was British air base about one kilometre away from the spot, which was set up during World War II and is no longer being used.

It is assumed that the warplane had crashed during the war in the area.

Bangladesh Air Force sources said they are digging the plot to unearth the remains of the warplane. The area will be kept under the control of BAF and it is expected that the remains of the airplane will provide interesting information, they said.

The remains of the warplane unearthed so far are now in custody of BAF, the OC said.
