'Rapist' sent to jail

A Nilphamari court yesterday sent an alleged rapist to jail after the police produced him before it.

Earlier in the morning, police arrested Manik Roy, 22, son of Dhiren Roy of Gobindapur village, on charge of raping a speech-impaired seven-year-old girl at Devir Danga village in Sadar upazila.

The accused dragged the victim, daughter of a day labourer living beside his house, into a godown of a closed husking mill nearby while she was playing in a field on November 22, police and locals said.

He raped the minor girl there, injuring her seriously.

Hearing the victim's scream in the godown, locals took her to Nilphamari modern hospital as her condition was serious. She is now undergoing treatment there.

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mominul Islam said police arrested the accused from his relative's house at Devir Danga village.

Asad Alam, resident medical officer at the hospital, said signs of rape were found as the victim's medical test was done.
