Speakers at a human chain yesterday demanded punishment of the criminal who raped an orphan girl in Patuakhali orphanage on November 12.

Patuakhali district unit of Mahila Parishad and Patuakhali Shishu Surakkha Committee jointly formed the human chain in front of the deputy commissioner's (DC) office for half an hour.

Mahila Parishad Coordinator Prof Shirin Nahan, Shishu Surakkha Committee President Delwar Hossain Dilip and Patuakhali correspondent of Baishakhi Television Abdus Salam Arif, among others, spoke at the programme.

They demanded proper legal steps in the matter. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the DC over the matter.

Contacted, Investigation Officer Sushen Chandra Da, a sub-inspector of Patuakhali Police Station, said they have got the medical report of the victim and are examining witnesses and records.

“We will submit the charge sheet to the court within a short time,” he added.

The nine-year-old orphan was raped allegedly by a shopkeeper on November 12 and then confined to a room of Patuakhali Government Orphanage for three days. She was rescued by police and members of the district administration on November 15.

Police arrested the alleged culprit named Motaleb and sent him to jail.
