Police looking for teacher in Sylhet who poured hot tea on 7-year-old as punishment

Police in Sylhet's Jaintiapur upazila are looking to arrest a teacher who allegedly poured hot tea on a seven-year-old student as punishment, causing burn injuries.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning, when Maktab (Islamic religious school) teacher Abdul Karim (27) poured a cup of hot tea on class II student Shahriar Nafis, son of Ekhlas Uddin of Hemu Majhpara village, for talking to his classmates, said the victim's father.

Mohsin Ali, officer-in-charge of Jaintiapur Police Station, said police visited the child's home and his father is preparing to file a case with the station tonight.

Abdul Karim, also a teacher of nearby Darul Ulum Hemu Madrasha, went into hiding after the issue surfaced on social media yesterday, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

Nafis, who suffered burns with his neck and some parts of chest and back, was treated locally, said the father.

He added that he did not file a case initially because he feared reprisal from influential locals.
