Poet Al Mahmud’s body taken to Brahmanbaria ancestral home

He will be buried tomorrow

The body of illustrious poet Al Mahmud, who died at a city hospital last night, was taken to his home in Brahmanbaria tonight for burial.

“A hearse carrying the coffin of Al Mahmud reached Mourail in Brahmanbaria town around 8:30pm,” our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports quoting the poet's close aide Abid Azam.

He will be buried at the family graveyard at South Mourail after namaz-e-janaza at Niaz Mohammad High School ground after Zohr prayers tomorrow, he said.

Before the burial, his body will be kept in the same school ground for paying tribute from 11:00am on the day, Azam added.

Earlier in the day, the first namaz-e-janaza of the poet was held in the premise of Bangla Academy in the capital around 11:45am while the second in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Zohr prayers.

Al Mahmud, one of the major poets of Bangla literature, died at the Intensive Care Unit of Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area last night at the age of 83.

Earlier on February 9, he was admitted to the same hospital as he was suffering from multiple old-age complications for a long time.

Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud emerged in the realm of Bangla literature in 1950s. He won over the hearts of hundreds with his masterpiece poetries “Lok Lokantor” and “Sonali Kabin”.
