PM, President express condolences on demise of Hefazat chief Ahmad Shafi

Condolences poured in from different socio-political parties and Islamic organisations immediately after the demise of Hefazat-e Islam's chief Ahmad Shafi.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, different ministers and distinguished personalities expressed profound shock and sorrow at the demise of Shafi.

In her condolence message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Allama Shafi made important contributions to preaching and expansion of Islamic education in the country.

"Besides, Allama Shafi played a role in modernisation of Qawmi madrasa education system," she said.

The premier prayed for the salvation and eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

In another message of condolence, President Abdul Hamid said Allama Shafi had played an important role in promoting Islam at home and abroad, BSS reports.

Law Minister Anisul Huq in a separate message expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Shah Ahmad Shafi.

He prayed for the salvation and eternal peace of Ahmad Shafi, a law ministry press release said.

Ahmad Shafi passed away at Dhaka's Asgar Ali Hospital around 6:30pm. He was flown to Dhaka from Chattogram by a helicopter this afternoon after his condition deteriorated.

Earlier, he was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) last night and admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital as his blood pressure and pulse rate decreased.
