Garment Worker Gang Rape

One held, three still at large

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested an accused in the case for gang rape of a 15-year-old garment worker in Mymensingh Sadar upazila on Monday.

The accused, Sumon Mia, 25, son of Surat Ali of Char Ishwardia village in Mymensingh Sadar, was arrested from Shambhuganj Bazar area around 10:30pm on Monday, said Shah Kamal Akanda, OC of DB, Mymensingh.

“He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court this afternoon with a prayer for seven-day remand. No hearing was held today [Tuesday] and the court sent him to jail,” the OC said.

On the night of October 10, the girl reached Mymensingh city on the way to her home at Char Bhawanipur village in Mymensingh Sadar upazila from Dhaka, police said.

The girl crossed the Brahmaputra river on a boat at Kachari ferry terminal with another youth Ruhul with whom she was introduced on the way.

They rented a motorcycle of one Bappi Mia, 22, son of Babul Mia of adjacent Char Ishwardia village, to reach home.

Bappi drove his bike to a lonely place at Binpara, around half a kilometre away, where three other youths joined him, raped the girl and left, police said.

Afterwards the victim jumped into the river to commit suicide when locals rescued her and took her to Kotwali Police Station. Then she was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

The victim's mother filed a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing Bappi and three unnamed youths the following day.

Arrested Sumon is Bappi's neighbour, police said.
