One to die, 6 get life term

A Kishoreganj court on Monday sentenced a man to death and six others for life term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Katiadi upazila in 2011.

The one who was awarded death penalty is Mohammad alias Khokon, 43, son of Tayebur Rahman of Panchli village in the upazila, while the lifers are Tayebur Rahman, 60, his two sons--Samrat, 30, and Roman, 36,--Ashraf Ali, 48, Mujibur Rahman, 43, and Arab Ali, 32.

First Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim also fined the lifers Tk 2 lakh each.

Meanwhile, five other accused of the case were acquitted as charges brought against them were not proved.

According to the case statement, farmer Motiur Rahman, a neighbour of Tayebur, gave Tk 40,000 to the latter for arranging a job for the his son in 2011.

Later, a feud developed between the two when Motiur asked Tayebur to return his money after the latter failed to manage the job.

As a sequel, Tayebur and his men, including his three sons, attacked Motiur with sharp weapons while he was returning home from a local marker on March 27 the same year, leaving his critically injured.

Hearing screams, villagers rescued Motiur and took him to Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in adjacent Bajitpur upazila, where the doctors declared him dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Kishoreganj General Hospital for autopsy.

The following day, deceased’s son Reaz Uddin lodged a case with Katiadi Police Station accusing 19 persons.

After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet against 12 people on October 21 the same year.
