Neighbour forcibly harvests paddy from indigenous woman’s land

Paddy on land belonging to an elderly indigenous woman was forcibly harvested by her neighbour in Natore Sadar upazila yesterday morning.

Bishnu Rani Teli, 60, purchased 13 decimals of land in Shankerbhag village in 2007.

Later yesterday, police held her neighbour Abdus Samad, 55, and his son Selim Hossain, 24, after her son Mithun Kumar Teli filed a written complaint with Natore Sadar Police Station, accusing them of forcibly removing paddy from their land.

While speaking with this correspondent, Bishnu Rani said Abdus Samad recently started claiming ownership of her land and yesterday morning he and his accomplices started harvesting the paddy on the land.

When she and her family members tried to stop them, Samad made death threats on them, she alleged.

Faridul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Natore Sadar Police Station, said there had been a dispute between Bishnu Rani and Samad over the ownership of 13 decimals of land in Shankerbhag village.

They took Samad and his son in police custody after receiving the written complaint against them, he said.

Investigation is on for taking further action in this regard, he added
