Murder in Libya: 7 shown arrested

Seven members of a human trafficking gang were shown arrested today in a case filed over the killing of 26 Bangladeshis in Libya on May 28.

The seven are: Nur Hossain Sheikh, Imam Hossain Sheikh, Zulhas Sardar, Leku Sheikh, Nasir Bayati, Rezaul Bayati, Tina Begum, Rakhi Begum and Bulu Begum.

They were arrested from different places across the country on different dates.

The case was filed on June 2 with Paltan Police Station in Dhaka against 38 named and 35 unnamed people for their alleged involvement in trafficking a number of people to Libya, including the 26 who were killed on May 28.

Before showing them as arrested, the seven were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mondol through videoconference.

CID Inspector Mizanur Rahman, investigation officer of the case, submitted a petition on July 4 with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka to show them arrested in the case.

Earlier on June 30, Kamal Uddin alias Haji Kamal, an alleged ringleader of a human trafficking, and four others were shown arrested in the same case.

The 26 Bangladeshis were killed and 11 others were injured when human traffickers opened fire on a group of migrants being taken to Tripoli from Benghazi.

So far, 26 cases have been filed against 300 people with different police stations following the killings.

Sixty-seven people have been arrested so far and of them, 36, including an employee of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, were arrested by the CID.

Of the arrestees, 20 have already given confessional statements in court, said sources.
