The prime accused in a police officer murder case was killed in a "gunfight" with Rapid Action Battalion in Brahmanbaria early today.

The deceased -- Mamun Mia (28) -- was accused in four cases including murder, robbery and arms filed with Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station, reports our district correspondent.

He was the prime accused in a case filed in connection with the murder of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Model Police Station Amir Hossain, who was stabbed to death allegedly by Mamun during a drive conducted to arrest him on Friday.

Another injured ASI of the police station -- Mani Shankar Chakma -- filed the murder case on Friday night in this regard. Later, two people including Mamun's younger brother Ismail Hossain were arrested in this connection.

Talking to media today, Chandan Debnath, assistant director of Rab-14, Bhairab camp, said the gunfight took place in Chandpur Bazaar area under Machhihata union in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila.

On secret information, a team of Rab conducted a drive to arrest Mamun of Chandpur village but sensing their presence, Mamun opened fire at the Rab personnel, forcing them to fire back that triggered a "gunfight", he said.

Mamun was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his cohorts managed to flee the scene. He was later rushed to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where an on-duty doctor declared him dead.

A foreign made pistol, four rounds of bullets and a knife were recovered from the spot, he added.

His body has been sent to Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
