A man allegedly gouged out his wife's eye at a village in Kalihati upazila of Tangail early today as she refused to get involved in drug trade with him.

The man, Faruk Hossain, 25, hailing from Busundi village in Tangail's Mirzapur upazila, went into hiding after the incident, said Hasan-Al-Mamun, officer-in-charge of Kalihati Police Station.

The injured Ankhi Akhter, 20, is now undergoing treatment at the National Eye Science Institute and Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Quoting Ankhi's family members, OC Hasan-Al-Mamun said Faruk used to take and sell drugs. He also used to ask Ankhi to get involved in drug trade with him. As she refused, Faruk used to torture her.

Ankhi moved back to her father's home at Maista Chowdhuribari village under Narandia union in Kalihati upazila one year back.

Since then, Faruk used to call Ankhi on the phone and threatened to kill her, said the OC.

Around 2:00am today, Faruk allegedly broke into Ankhi's room at her parents' home, gouged out her left eye with scissors and fled the scene, said the police official.

Shafiqul Islam Sajib, resident medical officer (RMO) of Tangail General Hospital, said the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

She was referred to the National Eye Science Institute and Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment, the doctor said.

Khokon Miah, Ankhi's uncle, said she was married off to Faruk about seven years ago and they have a two-year-old daughter.

OC Hasan-Al-Mamun also said he has already sent a police team in the area for investigating the incident and asked the victim's family members to file a case in this regard.

"Necessary action will be taken after filing of the case," the police official added.
