Man killed by rivals

A man was killed in an attack allegedly by men of rival group over capture of a waterbody in Sirajganj’s Shahzadpur upazila yesterday.

The deceased, Mohammad Abdul Awal, 38, son of Solaiman Pramanik, was a resident of Bri Angaru village in the upazila.

Quoting locals and the deceased’s family members, police said there had been a longstanding rivalry between Awal and Abdullah of the village over capture of a government waterbody.

The incident occurred after people loyal to Abdullah attacked Awal with sharp weapons when the latter went to the waterbody yesterday morning, leaving him dead on the spot, Officer in Charge (OC) of Shahzadpur Police Station Mohammad Ataur Rahman said.

Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Sirajganj General Hospital for autopsy, the OC said, adding that additional police have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward situation.
