A tribunal in Dhaka today finally discharged Sazzadul Haque from a “fake” case filed by a 26-year-old woman against him for torturing her for dowry.

Runa a resident of Arshinagar in Dhaka’s Keraniganj lodged the complaint with the tribunal on March 11 claiming that Sazzad married her in 2015 and used to torture her for dowry.

Judge Tabassum Islam of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 of Dhaka passed the order as Runa was not present before the tribunal even though she was asked to appear before it.

Talking to The Daily Star Sazzad said he was satisfied with the court order and demanded exemplary punishment for Runa who filed the false case against him.

Sazzad, a businessman of Barishal was present at the court and his lawyer pleaded for discharging him from the charge as his client neither married her nor knew her.

Meantime, Md Khairul Amin, who was mentioned in the case statement as the lawyer for Runa, apologized saying that he did not file the case and someone may have misused of his seal and signature to file the case.

Earlier on May 23, the tribunal issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Runa for her appearance and issued a show-cause to Khairul asking why he was not present at the tribunal yesterday to explain his written statement about the matter.

The judge also directed the officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Police Station to produce Runa before it during the next hearing of the case.

Sazzadul came to know the matter after Barishal Kotwali police arrested him on April 15 complying with the arrest warrant.

A Barishal court sent him to jail the next day where he has to languish for eight days for a crime he did not commit.

Sazzadul, an executive director of Barishal-based Zam-Zam Nursing Institute, claimed that the he did not marry her and the marriage certificate submitted to the tribunal was false.

Following his claims, The Daily Star investigated the matter and came to know that the marriage certificate was fake and the newspaper ran a story about the matter.
