Man to die for killing wife

A Netrakona court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2009.

The convict is Faruq Mia, 36, son of late Tofazzol Hossain of Dakhhin Kaldoar village in Purbadhala upazila.

He was tried in absentia, said Court Inspector Golok Chandra Basak.

According to the prosecution, Faruq strangled his wife Akter over family feud at their house on September 1 in 2009.

The following day, the victim's father Joynal Abedin lodged a case with Purbadhala Police Station, accusing five people including Faruq and his mother Mazeda Begum.

After investigation, police pressed a charge sheet against Faruq and his mother Mazeda on July 31 in 2012.

After examining witnesses and evidences, District and Sessions Judge KM Rasheduzzaman delivered the verdict. Mazeda was acquitted as charges against her could not be proved.
