Man to die for killing wife

A Sirajganj court yesterday awarded death sentence to a man on charge of killing his wife for dowry in 2012.

Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir pronounced the verdict in the crowded courtroom.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000.

The convict Mohir Uddin, 46, is son of Abu Akkas of Kandapara village in Shahzadpur upazila of the district.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Advocate Anwar Parvez Limon, quoting the case statement, said Mohir got married with Ambia Khatun alias Duli in 1997, taking Tk 1 lakh as dowry, adding that Mohir used to force his wife to bring more money.

On October 24 in 2012, Mohir strangled his wife to death over the matter in their house.

Her family members caught Mohir while he was fleeing from the spot and handed him over to police.
