Man to die, 5 get life term for murder

A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death and five others to life term imprisonment for killing a youth over land dispute in Sadar upazila in 2007.

Jamalpur District and Sessions Judge Md Zulfiquer Ali Khan tried all the convicts in absentia and fined the lifers Tk 10, 000 each.

The death sentence awardee is Ansar Ali Pramanik, 53, of Kumargati village, while the lifers are Kalam Pramanik, 58, his wife Shai Banu, 53, their sons Shahin, 36, and Saidul, 32, and Ansar's wife Shabnaj, 46.

According to the prosecution, Ansar in cooperation with other convicts killed his elder brother Roich Uddin's son Momin, then 22, over demarcation of their ancestral land in June 2007.
