Low pressure over Bay: maritime ports hoist cautionary signal-3

The country may face moderate to heavy rain from today as a low pressure has formed over Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) asked the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number-3.

Due to the low pressure formed over Bay of Bengal, many parts of the country may face light to heavy rain from today, said meteorologist Abdur Rahman Khan.

The low may weaken after one or two days but rain may continue across the country as monsoon will remain active, he said.

Under the influence of the well-marked low, low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 1-2 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.

According to the Met office, the low pressure formed over North-West Bay and adjoining North Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coast persists. The axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, the centre of the low and thence north-eastwards to Assam across the central part of Bangladesh.

Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and strong elsewhere over North Bay, it added.

The Met office also said light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Dhaka divisions with moderately heavy falls at places over the country.
