3 of a family among 5 killed by lightning strikes in Satkhira

Five people, including three members of a family, were killed and another was injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Kaliganj and Ashashuni upazilas of Satkhira today.

In Kaliganj upazila, three members of a family died on the spot and another suffered injuries after a thunderbolt struck them while they were sitting on the premises of their house in Garaimahal village around 11:00am, said Azibur Rahman, a sub-inspector of Kaliganj Police Station.

The deceased were identified as Al Amin Hossain, 28, his younger brother Rabiul Islam, 22, and Al Amin’s wife Sabina Parveen, 25.

Al Amin’s son Aminur Rahman Babu, 8, was critically injured in the thunderbolt strike and has been taken to Kaliganj upazila Health complex, said the police official.

In a separate incident, Mansur Ali, 48, a resident of Bagmari village under the same upazila, was killed by a lightning strike in Bijoynagar area at the same time while he was returning home, said SI Azibur.

In Ashashuni upazila, a thunderbolt struck Jewel Hossain, 24, at Budhata village while he was returning home from a fish enclosure around 11:00am, leaving him dead on the spot, said Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Ashashuni Police Station.
