Land Dispute: Man gets life term for killing

A Thakurgaon court yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment and another to six months in connection with a case for killing a man over land dispute in 2006.

The lifer was identified as Shahidul Islam Bulu, 59, son of late Jakaria of Dakkhin Rajagaon village in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, while Bahadur Ali, 58, son of Sanglu of the same village, is sentenced for six months imprisonment.

Thakurgaon Additional District and Session Judge Tariqul Kabir fined Shahidul Tk 10,000. In default, he is to suffer six months more in jail.

The court also fined Bahadur Tk 500, and, in default, he is to suffer another month in prison.

Judge Tariqul Kabir also acquitted 10 other accused in the case, as charges brought against them could not be proved.

According to the case statement, Sirajul Islam and his two brothers Shah Alam and Rashidul Islam, residents of the same village, went to cultivate their ancestral land on June 1 in 2006.

At one stage, a group of people led by Shahidul equipped with lethal weapons swooped on the three siblings and stabbed them indiscriminately, leaving them all severely injured.

Villagers rescued them in critical state and took them to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, from where they were later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Later, Rashidul, 16, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment there the same night.

The following day, Sirajul filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station accusing 16 people.

After investigating, Sub Inspector Adil Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet to the court on April 26 in 2007.
