KU authorities to sack 3 teachers who expressed solidarity with 2020 student movement

The authorities of Khulna University have decided to terminate three teachers of the university for expressing their solidarity with a student movement at the university in 2020.

The decision was made at a meeting of the KU syndicate, the highest governing body of the university, yesterday, KU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mosummath Hosna Ara told our Khulna correspondent.

The three teachers are Bangla Discipline Assistant Professor Abul Fazal, Bangla Discipline Lecturer Shakila Alam and History and Civilization Discipline Lecturer  Hoymonty Shukla Kabery.

On January 1, 2020, the university students staged a demonstration on the campus to press their five-point demands, including the reduction of tuition fees and ensuring accommodation. Some university teachers expressed their solidarity with the movement.

On October 13, 2020, the university authorities served show cause notices to four teachers, including the trio. In the notice, the KU authorities said that the teachers delivered provocative speeches and spread false information against the university.

As the allegations brought against the three teachers have been proved undoubtedly in the syndicate meeting on January 18, the university has started its process to terminate the teachers as per the university law, the pro-VC said.

The syndicate has asked the teachers to respond a notice sent to them by January 21 as to why they should not be terminated from the university although the allegation against them has been proved undoubtedly.
