JS sub-committee formed to look into alleged corruption in tender, procurement in railways

A parliamentary watchdog today formed a three-member sub-committee to look into the alleged corruption in tender and procurement process in the Ministry of Railways.

Headed by Md Shifuzzaman, an Awami League MP from Magura-1, the sub-committee was asked to submit its report before the main committee soon.

Two other members of the committee are Shafiqul Islam Shimul from Natore-2 and Shafiqul Azam Khan from Jhenaidah-3.

AL MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Railways Ministry, presided over the meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The meeting discussed issues related to ensuring transparency in the recruitment of manpower of Bangladesh Railway and prevention of corruption in procurement of various products, Shafiqul Islam Shimul, a member of the committee who was present at the meeting, told The Daily Star.

The meeting discussed about the procurement system of Bangladesh Railway, the latest status of converting two zones of Railway into four zones, formulation of lease for setting up petrol pump on the Bangladesh Railway land in Chattogram, latest status of giving lease of Bangladesh Railway land for establishing hospital in Chattogram, said a release of the parliamentary secretariat.

Committee members Railway Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan, Asaduzzaman Noor, Shafiqul Islam Shimul, Shafiqul Azam Khan, Md Shifuzzaman, Gazi Mohammad Shah Nawaz and Nadira Yeasmin Jolly attended the meeting.
