Graft case: Ex-DIG prisons Bazlur Rashid gets bail

A Dhaka court today granted ad-interim bail to suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Bazlur Rashid, in connection with a case filed for amassing Tk 3.08 crore beyond known sources of income.

Judge Md Iqbal Hossain of the Special Judge's Court-5 of Dhaka passed the order after his lawyer submitted a petition seeking bail in the case.

During the hearing, Advocate Sheikh Baharul Islam told the court that his client has been languishing in jail for a long time and there is no scope to tamper the investigation as the ACC pressed charges and the court framed charges against his client. So the bail petition should be granted, Bahar added.

Special Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir opposed the defence pleas, saying that the accused, while holding a topmost post of police, acquired illegal wealth. So the bail petition should be rejected, the PP added.

Upon hearing both sides, the judge granted Rashid bail till November 22, the next scheduled date.

The same court on October 22 framed charges against the police official.
