Gazipur woman councillor held for assaulting traffic cops

A woman councillor of Gazipur City Corporation was arrested today for allegedly assaulting two traffic constables at Chandana Intersection.

Ruhun Nesa Runa, also convener of the Gazipur Jubo Mohila League, slapped two traffic constables after they stopped her from driving her car on the wrong side of the intersection, reports our Gazipur correspondent quoting Mazharul Islam, assistant commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP).

Runa, councillor for reserved seat for Wards 31, 32 and 33 under GCC, was trying to make a u-turn at the intersection by ignoring the traffic signal. At this, a traffic constable on duty there stopped her. She then berated him and slapped him. When another constable tried to intervene, she slapped him as well, AC Mazharul said quoting the traffic policemen on the spot.

Other traffic policemen then detained Runa and informed Bason Police Station, the official said.

She was later taken to the station and placed in custody, said AKM Kausar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of the station.

Runa, however, alleged that the traffic constables were allowing other cars to make the u-turn but barred her from doing so. As she came out of her car and protested, the traffic officials made indecent remarks which prompted her to hit them, she told journalists at the station.

OC Kausar, however, denied the accusations. He said a case has been filed against her in this connection.
