Two killed in Tongi fan factory blast

Two workers were killed and 20 others injured in a blast at a fan factory in Tongi yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam, 18, and Shamsul Haque, 20. They lived in a rented house at Morkun in Tongi.

The blast occurred at National Fan Factory in BSCIC Industrial area around noon, said Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongi Purbo Police Station of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.

Six of the critically injured workers were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Rahim, an employee of the factory, said two bodies have so far been recovered from the rubble.

Twenty injured workers were rushed to Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Hospital, a resident doctor confirmed.

Station Officer Ashiqur Rahman of Tongi Fire Station said the blast occurred inside the “heat chamber” on the second floor of the three-storey factory. Two units of firefighters brought the fire under control after an hour efforts.

A five-member probe committee headed by Additional District Magistrate Moshiur Rahman has been formed to investigate the matter.
