Miscreants shot a fruit trader last night over establishing supremacy in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Injured Riaz, 40, of Chitalmari upazila of Bagherhat district, is a fruit trader at Baipail fruit market, our local correspondent reports quoting family members.

Javed Mashud, inspector (investigation)of Ashulia Police Station, said Riaz came under attack by a gang of at least four in Pollibiddut area of Ashulia around 10:00pm yesterday when he was returning to his residence from his business place.

The criminals first beat Riaz indescribably and later shot him in his stomach, leaving him critically injured, the police official said.

Hearing his hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and took him to Enam Medical College Hospital.

Inspector Javed Mashud said there is a longstanding conflict between two groups over establishing supremacy at Baipail fruit market.

Riaz might have been attacked by rivals over the dispute, the inspector said adding that they are looking into the matter.

No case was filed over the incident yet, he told the correspondent this afternoon.

The bullet has been removed and he is now out of danger, said Nasir Uddin, in-charge (Operation Theater) of Enam Medical college hospital.
