Free legal aid services for poor emphasised

Local public representatives and lawyers at a workshop here yesterday emphasised free legal aid service to speed up the trial of the cases that would help relieve the poor and distressed people, victims of repression and oppressions.

They were speaking at the workshop on 'District legal aid assistance' at Gobindanagar in Thakurgaon municipality.

Taking part in the open discussion, the participants elaborately discussed different problems of the service.  

They also emphasised speeding up trial of the cases that can give relief to hapless justice seekers from harassment.   

Alternative disposal of disputes was also discussed. They said public representatives of local government bodies can play important roles in it.  

They urged the lawyers and public representatives to inspire poor people to get free legal assistance. 

Md Hasanuzzaman, senior district and sessions judge, attended the event as chief guest and Dr KM Kamruzzaman Selim, deputy commissioner, attended as guest of honour with Dr Md Shahiduzzaman, executive director of Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO), in the chair.

 The chief guest said the government has set up Legal Aid Office in every district headquarters for providing legal aid.

 Under the programme, 1,421 extremely poor and distressed people in the district were provided free legal aid from November last year till October this year.

ESDO and Ayngoto Sohayata Prodan Sangstha jointly organised the event with the financial assistance of HEKS Eper, a donour agency of Switzerland.
