A Mymensingh court yesterday handed down death penalty to four persons for murder of two siblings eighteen years ago in Kodaldhar village of Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh.

The convicts are Liakat Ali, 55, his son Anwar Hossain, 35, Abul Kashem, 50, and Hossain Ali, 62, of Ramchandrapur in the same upazila.

The court also sentenced Fayez Uddin and Kurtul Mia to one year's imprisonment each. In default of which, each of them would have to serve an additional two months in jail.

Special District and Sessions Judge Md Ehsanul Haque delivered the verdict, said Khandaker Zahidul Islam, court inspector in Mymensingh.

According to the case statement, on August 4 in 2001, the convicts hacked and killed two brothers -- Abdur Rashid and Gias Uddin, sons of late Hafiz Uddin of Kodaldhar village in the upazila, over land dispute.

Another brother of the victims, Abdul Khaleque, filed the case with Tarakanda Police Station the same day, accusing 22 persons. All the accused were later arrested by police.

The court delivered the verdict based on charge sheet submitted by police against the accused and after examining evidence and accounts of witnesses.

The other 16 accused in the case were acquitted as charges brought against them were not proven.
