Miscreants have poisoned to death different species of fish worth of Tk5 crore at a farm in Ashulia area of Savar.

A group of unscrupulous people threw poison into a 60-bigha water body in Jirabo area of Ashulia that caused the death of around 100 tons of fish -- found floating in the water body-- today, our Savar correspondent reports quoting Shahidul Islam Bapary, an owner of the fish farm.

Shahidul Islam said they have been farming fish in their family-owned water body for the last 22 years, and noticed that a large number of fish were floating in the water since yesterday.

At least 30 tons of dead fish have been buried so far, the farm owner said.

"We had no dispute with anyone, but sometimes, we forbade people from fishing in the water body. It might have caused someone to pour pesticides into the fish farm," Shahidul Islam said.

Talking to the correspondent, Harun-ur-Rashid, a senior fisheries officer of Savar upazila, said upon receiving the information, a team of officials reached the spot to take necessary measures, including testing the water of the fish farm.
