First Bangladeshi VC accorded reception in Australia

Prof Amit Chakma, the first Bangladeshi to take over as Vice-Chancellor and President of University of Western Australia (UWA), has been accorded a reception.

The University of Western Australia Society of Bangladeshi Culture, an organisation of Bangladeshi students studying at the University of Western Australia (UWA), has organised the reception on the evening of November 21.

He took over the charge as the 19th VC and President of the university in July this year.

The society awarded Prof Amit Chakma an honorary medal and a sash during the programme held at the Leederville Town Hall auditorium in Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, according to a press release.

Prof Amit Chakma distributed prizes among the winners of the Annual Sports Competition-2020 of the Bangladeshi Community of the University of Western Australia.

In the next part of the programme, the next generation of children and adolescents of the community growing up in Australia highlighted the cultural heritage of Bangladesh.

In addition, expatriate Bangladeshis performed patriotic songs, dances, songs, recitations of poems, tribal dances and more.

Prof Amit, who was born in Rangamati, Bangladesh, previously served as the 10th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario, Canada for 10 years from 2009-19.
