Firearm, bullets snatched from police in Gazipur, rescued after drive

5 arrested

Police recovered a firearm and eight bullets early today after a group of people snatched those from a police team during a drive in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

A team of Sreepur Police Station launched the drive at the house of late Abdur Rahman in Noagaon village around 11:00pm last night to rescue four employees of a manpower company of Dhaka, said Khondokar Imam Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station.

The family members of Abdur Rahman confined the employees and beat them as they took Tk 2 lakh from the family for sending two members of the family to Dubai but failed due to coronavirus pandemic, said the OC.

The family members also attacked the police team and snatched away a short gun and magazine loaded with eight rounds of bullets when the policemen launched the drive to rescue the victims, said the police official.

Two policemen -- Sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam, constable Khorshed Alam -- and Ansar member Sukumar Roy were also injured in the attack.

Around 1:30am today, another team of high officials of district police launched a special drive at the house and recovered the firearm and bullets, said the OC.

The five alleged attackers were arrested from the spot. They are: Rowshni, wife of late Abdur Rahman, and her daughter-in-law Monisa Moni and their relatives Farhad Uddin, Tajul Islam and another Tajul Islam.

The team also rescued the four employees of the manpower company from the confinement. They are Abul Hossain Rony, Foysal Ahmed, Abul Kalam and Amar Bepari.
