Fire kills elderly woman, destroys 6 houses

An elderly woman was burned to death and six houses were destroyed in a fire in Faridpur's Nagarkanda upazila yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Trishna Begum, 70, wife of late Fayz Uddin, from Binokdia Bazar in the upazila.

The fire originated from Tota Bapari's kitchen around 2:00pm at a slum in Binokdia Bazar area and it soon spread to adjacent houses including that of Trishna Begum's, said Atiqul Rahman, station officer of Nagarkanda Fire Service and Civil Defence.

On information, a fire unit from the station rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire with the help of locals, he said, adding that Trishna Begum however died before they rescued her from her house.

The value of properties damaged by the fire was estimated at Tk 10 lakh, he added.
