FF's house torched

The house of a retired government official was torched by miscreants over a disputed char land in the dead Baleshwar river under Nazirpur upazila yesterday.

However, none sustained injuries in the fire, said police.

House owner Jagadish Chandra Biswas, former joint secretary of public administration ministry, lives in Dhaka with his family.

Contacted, Jagadish, also a freedom fighter, said he has no enmity with anyone.

Locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Jagadish of Pashchim Baniary village and the villagers over ownership of the land, said locals. On Saturday, two rival groups of the village locked in an altercation over catching fish in an enclosure on the land.

The house might have been torched following the Saturday's incident, said its caretaker Baburam Biswas, adding that locals doused the fire.
