Shooting of Former BCL Leader

Family demands arrest of Natore BCL chief

Family members of bullet-wounded former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Shahriar Hossain Rion at a press conference in Natore town yesterday demanded immediate arrest of the accused Rakibul Hasan Jems, president of BCL district unit.

Rion's aunt Rosy Begum readout a written note at the press conference, held at her resident in Barogachha area of the town where Rion's father Alam Hossain and brother Atikur Rahman were present.

In her speech, Rosy claimed that Jems and his two friends Ripon and Rony forcibly took away the keys of a truck belonging to her on Monday and demanded Tk 10 lakh ransom to return it.

Jems also threatened her and Rion's family members to withdraw the case filed against him, otherwise, they would face dire consequences, she alleged.

According to the case statement, on Tuesday, when Rosy went to her cousin, Rion's father, for help and was talking with him Jems came to the scene and pulled a gun on Rion's father.

As Rion, former general secretary of Natore Nawab Siraj Ud Dullah College unit BCL, came forward and requested Jems not to shoot his father, he shot Rion on the right leg.

Though Rion's father Alam Hossain filed a case with Natore Sadar Police Station in this regard the same night, police are yet to arrest any of the culprits.

Natore Superintendent of Police Saifullah Al Mamun said they recovered a pistol and three bullets in an abandoned condition from the spot.

Rosy's husband Moniruzzaman Sentu took loan of Tk 20 lakh from him for business purpose, Jems said, adding that now they are bringing false allegations in a bid to tarnish his image.
