Ex-BCL leader ‘grabs land’ of AL leader

A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and a sand trader in Trishal upazila allegedly encroached on a piece of agricultural land by dumping sand on it from the Brahmaputra river.

Mozammel Haque, vice-president of Balipara Union unit of Awami League and owner of the land, made the accusation at a press conference held at Mymensingh Press Club auditorium yesterday.

Mozammel claimed that on September 12, Rezaul Karim, an ex-joint secretary of BCL’s Trishal municipality unit, leased 35 acres of ‘Balu Mahal’ in Trishal’s Balipara.

Soon afterwards, Rezaul started to occupy the adjacent land, belonging to Mozammel. Rezaul did not refrain from the illegal act despite numerous requests made by Mozammel, he also said.

So far, Rezaul occupied four acres of his agricultural land where seasonal vegetables are grown. “Finding no other means, we lodged a complaint with the High Court and the court issued a status quo on the matter on December 1 this year,” he claimed.

Rezaul, however, refuted the allegation and claimed that he did not receive any copy of the court order yet.
