Demand landowners in Bagerhat
Over 200 landowners on Monday demanded proper compensation for their land, acquired for the development of Khan Jahan Ali Airport in Rampal upazila.
Speakers at a human chain also urged the authorities concerned to take steps to rehabilitate the affected families.
Earlier, the affected people of Hogoldanga village held a human chain at Foylahat Bazar in the upazila.
Milon Mallik at the programme said, “We welcome the government's decision, but since the beginning of the land acquisition for the airport, officials associated with the process have been involved in many irregularities.”
As a result, they didn't get proper and adequate compensations for their lands, shops, houses and even trees, Milon added.
Mongla Civil Society President Mohammad Noor Alam Sheikh said the land acquisition victims are forced to pay bribe at the Land Acquisition (LA) branch of the Deputy Commissioner's Office for realising their compensation money.
Many of the victims, who have lost all their lands for the development of the airport, did not get even a single taka for their lands and houses, he said.
Mallik Moazzem Hossain, Rezaul Islam, Lovely Begum, Kamruzzaman, Kamrul Islam and Shahrunnesa also spoke at the programme.
