Elderly man killed over Tk 1,000!

Neighbours allegedly beat an elderly man dead and injured his wife in Birampur upazila after the couple went to their neighbour’s house on Monday and asked them to repay Tk 1,000. 

Sultan Ali, 55, a farmer from Dudhiagachhi village, died around 1:00am on Tuesday at M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital (MARMCH) in Dinajpur. His wife Saleha Begum is still undergoing treatment at Birampur Upazila Health Complex.

Police said they detained two individuals in this connection. They however did not disclose their names.

A week ago, Sultan’s neighbour Belal Hossain borrowed Tk 1,000 from Saleha and committed to pay back the money this Monday, police said quoting locals.

On Monday evening, when Saleha and Sultan went to Belal’s house for the money, Belal and his family members engaged in an altercation with them. At one stage, Belal, his brother Shakil, sister Bithi and their mother Beauty Begum beat the neighbours with bamboo sticks and rendered them unconscious. 

Locals rescued the couple and took them to the upazila health complex. Critically injured Sultan was transferred to MARMCH where he succumbed to his injuries.

Process was underway to file a case in this connection, said Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Birampur Police Station.
