Dumping Bank Notes: 3 municipality staff get show cause notice

Bogura municipality authorities yesterday served notices to three officers to show cause for negligence in dealing with Bangladesh Bank’s discarded notes.

The notices signed by municipality Mayor Advocate AKM Mahbubur Rahman asked

Mamunur Rashid and Aminul Islam, inspectors of the conservancy department of the municipality, and Rafiul Abedin, slum development officer, to give satisfactory answer within next 24 hours, said Rezaul Karim, secretary of Bogura municipality.

“Their responsibility was to ensure dumping of the discarded notes of Bangladesh Bank at specific spots but they did not perform their duties properly. Therefore, the mayor served them show cause notices,” said Rezaul Karim.

“If they fail to give satisfactory reply, action will be taken because there is a huge different between ordinary garbage and discarded bank notes.

“We could not take action against the truck driver concerned because he is not a municipality employee. That truck was a rented one and we have already cancelled the contact with the truck owner, which we had signed a month ago,” the official added.

Contacted, Mamunur Rashid, inspector (in charge) of the conservancy department, told this correspondent, “It was not my fault. The truck driver dumped the notes in 18-20 sacks into the Khaowra Beel in Shajahanpur upazila on Sunday Morning although we had ordered him to dispose it of at our specific dumping sites.”

On Sunday morning, locals in Bogura’s Shajahanpur upazila woke to what seemed to be an absurd sight -- bank notes floating in the waterbody near Khaowra bridge area.

The incident later created a huge reaction among the locals and on the social media.
