3, including 2 Rohingyas, killed in separate ‘gunfights’

Three people, including a suspected drug dealer and two Rohingyas, were killed in reported gunfights with the law enforcers in Kushtia and Cox’s Bazar early today.

In Cox’s Bazar, two alleged Rohingya criminals were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila.

The deceased were identified as Md Abdul Karim, 24, and Nesar Ahmed Prakash, 27, of Nayapara Rohingya Camp in Hnila, Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, told our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.

They were accused in at least five cases including Jubo League leader Omar Faruk murder case, the police official said.

On information that Rohingya criminals were holing up on a hill in Jadimura area of Hnila, a team of police raided the spot around 12:30am, the OC added.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, criminals started shooting at them prompting them to retaliate.

After the gunfight, the law enforcers found two bullet -hit bodies and rushed them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Three police officials were also hurt during the incident.

Police recovered two locally-made firearms and seven rounds of bullet from the spot.  

In Kushtia, a suspected drug dealer was killed in an alleged gunfight among police and two groups of ‘drug peddlers’ in Mollateghoria village of Kushtia Sadar upazila early today.

The deceased was identified as Sujon Malitha, 30, son of Ismile Malitha of Takimara village of the upazila, our Kushtia correspondent reports quoting Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Mustafizur Rahman rushed to the bank of GK (Ganges- Kabodak) canal while a gunfight between two groups of drug traders was going on around 2:30am, the OC said.

Sensing presence of the lawmen, the criminals started firing at them compelling them to fire back, leading to a tree-way gunfight, the OC said adding that Sujon came in line of the fire and died on the spot.

Later, Sujon’s body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.

Police also recovered 300 pieces of Yaba tablets, 50 bottles of phensedyl, a firearm with a round of bullets from the spot.

Sujon was wanted in seven drug related cases filed with Kushtia Model Police Station, OC Nasir said.
