3 killed in Dhaka, Munshiganj, Rangpur 'gunfights'

Three people including two alleged drug traders were killed in separate “gunfights” with law enforcers in Dhaka, Munshiganj and Rangpur districts early today.

In Dhaka, a drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Khilkhet area around 1:00am, said Md Kamruzzaman, assistant director of Rab-1.

Mizanur Rahman Jewel, 38, was an accused in 13 cases, mostly drug related, filed with different police stations, the Rab official added. 

Two Rab-members were also injured during the “gunfight”, he said adding a firearm, several bullets and yaba tablets were seized from the spot.

In Munshiganj Sadar upazila, a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) left a suspected drug peddler dead.

Deceased Sujan Mia, 36, was a top drug dealer in the wanted list of the home ministry, Enayet Mannan, superintendent of police of Rab-10, told our local correspondent.

Sujan and his associates opened fire on Rab men in Ramshing area, the law officer said. Rab men retaliated with equal, triggering a “gunfight”.

After the “gunfight”, the bullet-hit body of Sujan was found on the spot. Doctors at Munshiganj General Hoispital declared him dead, he added.

Rab also said to have seized yaba tablets, foreign pistol and bullets from the spot.

A Rab member -- Constable Mohsin -- was hurt during the “gun battle”.

In Rangpur, Shahidul Islam Sumon 34, an alleged top criminal of Lalmonirhat district was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Gangachara upazila.

Deceased Sumon, son of Maheshar Ali of Dudreshwar village in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat, was an accused in nine cases including rape and extortion ones.

A police team attempted to capture Sumon and one of his aides for their suspicious movement at East Ichali village (near Sheikh Hasina Bridge, Saifur Rahman, additional superintendent of police (Circle –A) in Rangpur, said.

Sumon was hit by a bullet when he tried to flee the spot firing gunshots and the law enforcers retaliated.

Later, the police team rescued him and rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way to the hospital. The body was sent to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

Police seized a firearm and yaba pills from the spot.
