Cases of diarrhoea rose alarmingly in Faridpur and surrounding districts in the last seven days.

Faridpur General Hospital (FGH) is seeing a wave of diarrhoea patients each day, said physicians.

Golapi Begum, senior staff nurse at FGH, yesterday said, “20 diarrhoea patients have been admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours and the number of patients is increasing every hour.”

“Patients from Rajbari and Madaripur are also coming here for treatment,” she said, adding that “More than 138 patients took treatment for diarrhoea at the hospital last week.”

During a visit to the hospital, this correspondent found many patients occupying hallways as the hospital could not provide beds for them.

Jamal Howlader, seven-month-old diarrhoea patient Ruhan Howlader’s father, from Majhipara village in Madaripur’s Kalkini, said, “My son has been suffering from diarrhoea for the last five days. At first, we admitted him to Madaripur General Hospital, but [soon] the doctor transferred him to Faridpur General Hospital.”

Rezwan Khan, 25, another diarrhoea patient, from Alipur in Faridpur Sadar upazila, said, “I got admitted to the hospital with by diarrhoea on Tuesday.”

Beauty Begum, 30, from Dangi village in the same upazila, said, “I got admitted here as I had been suffering from diarrhoea for the past three days.”

Ganesh Kumar Agarwal, resident medical officer at the hospital, said, “They are affected by diarrhoea due to hot weather. Although there are only 10 beds for diarrhoea patients [here], we are trying our best to provide necessary treatment for them.”

He also said that the hospital has adequate supply of medicines to treat the diarrhoea patients.
