Dhaka-Mawa highway blocked demanding removal of highway police

Locals blocked Dhaka-Mawa highway in Rajendrapur area of Keraniganj today demanding removal of highway police from the area.

Around 700 villagers from surrounding areas blocked the highway with torched tyres from 11:00am to 12:00noon, Shah Zaman, officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station, said.

They also got engaged in a scuffle with police and vandalised some vehicles, he said.  Later, police officials from the station went to the spot and cooled down the situation.

The locals want no highway police there because the police do not let any rickshaws or three-wheelers to ply on the road, the police official said.

They say the ban of such small vehicles cause great sufferings for them, he added.
