Criminal killed in Rangamati ‘gunfight’

A Jumma man was killed in a 'gunfight' with the law enforcing agency in Jibtoli area of Rangamati Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

The deceased, Milton Chakma, 48, a resident of Prejuchhara Para in Rangamati Sadar upazila, was a member of JSS-MN Larma group.

According to an ISPR press release, on secret information, a patrol team of Bangladesh Army from Jibtoli Camp went to Kaptai Lake area and found that a group of JSS-MN Larma were collecting toll from the innocent fishermen on Sunday night.

When the patrol team tried to catch the boat carrying the criminals, the gang opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight between them.

After the gunfight, the law enforcers searched the boat and found Milton's body lying there.

They also recovered a pistol and three bullets from the boat.

Milton was an accused in a number of cases filed with different police stations including for murder.

Meanwhile, Milton's daughter Anti Chakma claimed that Milton was picked up from his house around 7:30pm on Sunday.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rangamati General Hospital for autopsy, Officer in Charge of Kotwali Police Station Kabir Hossain said.

A team of the law enforcing agency were conducting drives to arrest the other members of the gang.
