Cop closed for torturing woman

A policeman has been closed for allegedly torturing a middle-aged woman at Dhunat Police Station premises on Friday.

Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Dhunat Police Station Shahanur Rahman was closed and attached to Bogura Police Lines on Friday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Dhunat and Shepur Circle) Gaziur Rahman said, adding that they visited the spot and found some evidence of torture during primary investigation.

Victim Kahinur Begum, wife of Zakir Hasan of Nataipara area of the town, who runs a small eatery at Bogura court premises, is now undergoing treatment at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH).

Talking to this correspondent at the hospital, Kahinur said ASI Shahanur used to take lunch at her eatery quite regularly.

“Shahanur borrowed Tk 60,000 from me five to six years back. As he wasn’t repaying the money, I sent him a legal notice in this regard about two months ago,” she said.

“Afterwards, Shahanur returned my money on July 3, but he started spreading a rumour that I realised Tk 3.5 lakh from him through blackmailing,” she added.

Kahinur said when she went to Dhunat Police Station around 10:30am on Friday to know why Shahanur was spreading such rumour, suddenly he started beating her with a wooden stick.

Locals took injured Kahinur to Dhanut Upazila Health Complex, from where she was later shifted to SZMCH.

Despite repeated attempts over mobile phone, this correspondent could not reach ASI Shahanur for his comment.
