A man convicted in a robbery case was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Munshiganj’s Sreenagar upazila early today.

Deceased Mohammad Tajel, 36, was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment in a robbery case and also an accused in nine other cases, our Munshiganj correspondent reports quoting a police official.

Tajel, also an alleged drug peddler, was son of Din Islam Khorshed alias Yunus Sheikh at Baghorar Rudrapara village of the same upazila, said Yunus Ali, officer-in-charge of Sreenargar Police Station.

Tipped off, a team of the police station arrested Tajel from Monirampur upazila of Jashore yesterday morning, said the OC.

Later, the police team along with Tajel went Paschim Baroikhali around 1:00am to recover hidden firearms.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, his associates opened fire targeting police, forcing the policemen to retaliate that triggered the “gunfight”.

When Tajel tried to flee the scene, he was hit by a bullet, the OC said.

After the “gunfight”, police took Tajel to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, he added.

Three policemen were also injured during the reported gun battle.

Police also recovered a single barrel gun, three bullets, 101 Yaba pills and some bullet shells from the spot, the police official said.
