Case against Nixon Chowdhury: Section 144 imposed in Faridpur Sadar

Local administration imposed Section 144 in Faridpur Sadar Upazila Headquarters today, effectively imposing curfew out of fear of clashes as supporters of Faridpur-4 MP Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury -- popularly known as "Nixon" -- and his rival group called rallies and counter rallies at the same venue and time.

The restrictions will remain in force until 9:00am tomorrow, said Purobi Goldar, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer.

Supporters of Faridpur-4 MP Mujibur Rahman Nixon Chowdhury and their rival group called meetings around 10:00am at Sadarpur Stadium in Sadar upazila headquarters today.

Anticipating possible clashes between the two groups, local administration imposed the restriction on public gatherings in and around a one kilometer radius of the SadarUpazila Headquarters.

Sadarpur Upazila Chairman Kazi Shafiqur called a rally protesting the case filed against MP Nixon, while a member of Jubo League central committee Sayedid Gamal Lipu called another rally demanding the arrest of MP Nixon.

Senior District Election Commission officer Nauabul Islam filed a case with Charbhadrashon police station on Thursday against Nixon, for violating electoral code of conduct during the by-election to the post of chairman of Charbhadrasan Upazila Parishad.

Nixon reportedly threatened the deputy commissioner and the assistant commissioner (land) of Faridpur district over the arrest of his supporters during the by-elections, and hurled abusive language at his rivals.
