Caned by teacher, boy lands in clinic

A Class VI student of Shah Sundor high school in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar had to receive treatment for injuries as the headmaster mercilessly caned him on Sunday.

The victim is Md Shahan Mia, 12, son of Motalib Mia of Ghagtia village, and a Class VI student of Shah Sundor High School in the upazila.

According to the school authorities, some students found a gaslight in Shahan's pocket on Sunday.

He used to warn students by lighting the gaslight, said a few students.

After getting complaint of Shahan's misbehaviour, headmaster Abdul Qayum ordered the boy to kneel down as punishment.

“Later, Shahan threatened his classmates who had complained against him. Being informed, I whipped him and then sent him to a local clinic for first aid,” said the headmaster.

He expressed sorrow for the incident.

Several students said the boy was sent to the clinic after he fainted due to the merciless beating.

The headmaster, however, said the boy was slightly injured but did not faint. 

Shahan's father said, "Possibly my son took the gaslight from my stall and kept it in his pocket. But a teacher cannot beat a boy in such a way."

Upazila Secondary Education Officer Mohammad Anwar said he will look  into the matter.
