Businessman jailed for embezzling money

A Faridpur court yesterday sentenced a filling station owner to 10 years' imprisonment for misappropriating Tk 66.42 lakh from Rupali Bank's Badarpur branch in Sadar upazila of the district.

The convict is Mohammad Mohsin Mia, owner of M/S Mohsin and Brothers Filling Station at Brahmankanda in Sadar upazila, Faridpur Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Sharif Kaisar Rahman said.

Judge Mohammad Motiur Rahman of Special Judge's Court delivered the verdict in presence of the convict.

The court also fined the convict the embezzled amount of Tk 66.42 lakh. In default, he is to suffer seven months more in jail, the prosecutor said.

Faridpur Regional Manager of Rupali Bank Shahidul Islam said Mohsin embezzled Tk 66.42 lakh from Rupali Bank's Badarpur branch in cooperation with the then manager of the branch Sekender Ali in 2000.

Sekender, however, died a few days after the incident.

Later, ACC official Mohammad Abu Bakkar Siddique filed a case with Sadar Police Station against Mohsin in this regard in 2002.
